Love is Easy Until Our Spouse Gets Difficult…Then What?

It seems the idea of loving our spouses is easy until something difficult happens in our relationship. Our spouse is cranky or thoughtless. He or she says something hurtful or insensitive. Critical relatives come into town and steal your peace while your spouse is enjoying every moment with them. There is a whole array of things that can happen that make it difficult to feel loving towards our spouses.

It is in those moments we need to remember, “God is love and love comes from God” – 1 John 4:7-8.  These challenging times are when we need to reach beyond ourselves to the source of our love…God. God’s love will allow us to love the person who is not so lovable in that moment. It will enable us to be selfless instead of selfish. It will make it possible for us to live out the fruit of the Spirit, “love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control” – Galatians 5:22-23.

1 John 4:12 says, “…if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.” I love how author Kelly Minter explains this verse, “Just as God’s love flowed through His Son and then to us, so that love is to continue to flow from us to others. When we love others, the love of God is made whole in us because it is having its full work.” Loving God and loving others was the most important command Jesus gave us. Whenever you struggle with loving your spouse, go to the author and perfecter of love…God.
